Through her talent, commitment, and passion for a healthier planet, Carrie Armitage has created a complete story in this CD. It is cultural. It is eclectic. The Spirit Of The Times is a must-have for anyone who desires peace and harmony on Earth, and will encourage music lovers to take on new ways of seeing the world.

Carrie Armitage is a Canadian singer-songwriter with a proclivity for ecological-consciousness and peace activism. Carrie’s recent release, The Spirit of The Times, is a fairly candid take on the global awareness and preservation for the Earth’s vanishing resources. Carrie’s awareness of Earth’s impending plight is a musical message of electronica with varying shades of jazz, trip-hop, house, and lounge. The ambient beat of electronica and her vocals carry the song’s highs and lows from the darkest depths of Earth’s inner core through the vast darkness of intergalactic space.

The Spirit of The Times opens with “Great Floating World”, which is a percussive song with a beat resembling flowing water. The song is led by Carrie’s vocals about the precarious nature of Earth’s ecological balance. A spry piano medley is interspersed with haunting, symphonic vocals and a few spoken words. In short, Earth’s buoyancy in the greater universe is in turmoil. The most non-electronic song on the album is “Time To Find It”. The snare drum beat, somber piano playing, and Carrie’s pressing vocals about finding something before it is too late is a song without a clearly-defined theme, but the snare drum-marching rhythm suggests a song about finding an alternative solution to war.

“Water” is an anthem about water preservation on a global scale. The vocals are backed by gospel singers, a trip-hop piano beat, and spoken word phrases about the properties of water. “No Words Only Love” is a jazz-influenced romp through the electronic ether of the universe. The non-sensical, almost frenetic, vocals match the scat-vocal techniques indicative of jazz-pop standards from the mid-twentieth century. The electronic sounds have the musical ingredients for a potentially good song by the French-electronic group, Air. “What Do You Think” takes an angle on responsibility, civility, and social action. The gospel-esque backup singers and rhythmic overtones lighten the listening mood and evokes a contemplative response about the environment.

“The Twisting and Turning” is a whirling sound of jazzy-piano vocals with some percussion and electronic tones. The vocals seem a bit restrained, but it is nothing out of the ordinary for this type of music. “Into The Sublime” is not necessarily melodic, because the rhythm follows a more avante-garde, jazz standard pattern. However, the layered vocals at the end of the song are confusing and repetitious. Meanwhile, “The Spirit of The Times” continues the languid jazzy presence. Carrie’s spoken word parts excel on this track. The spoken word and mostly non-sensical lyrics on “It’s Up to Us” proclaims that love is a universal trait that should be shared. The song title is repeated throughout the song amid a trip-hop, electronic beat resembling the music of downtempo pioneers Alpha or Waldeck. “Watershed” sounds like something out of Ireland’s Ronan Hardiman’s symphonic and piano repertoire. The drippy electronic sounds, haunting vocals, and ethereal chants evoke the sounds of Enigma or Tangerine Dream’s instrumental works.

Carrie’s love for the environment is definitely an inspirational and critical topic to consider on a musical level. Still, her vocal delivery may be best suited for the spoken word genre. Carrie’s singing is passionate and beautiful, but it seems to work the best in the more jazz-centered songs. She foregoes melody for the message in some instances, but also creates moments where the dynamic electronic sounds and sheer amount of aural colors are stunning. The Spirit of The Times is a very good work of avante-garde or eco-trip-hop.

Great Floating World

Love’s second guessing
All that she’s after
Lost in the shuffle
Breaks into laughter
Caught in the heartbreak
Soft on the ever after

Silent
Water
Darkness
Haunts her
Stillness
Becomes her

Love found some answers
Back of the drawer
Lost in the shuffle
Long time before
Left from the days
Gatsby had all but Daisy

Silent
Water
Darkness
Haunts her
Stillness
Becomes her

Silent
Water
Darkness
Haunts her
Stillness becomes her

Stillness becomes her love

Silent
Water
Darkness
Haunts her
Stillness becomes her

Great Floating World
Wrought with disaster
Finds herself missing
All the she’s after
Lost in the shuffle
Gone is the ever after

Silent
Water
Darkness
Haunts her
Stillness
Becomes her

Stillness becomes her Great Floating World

Track Name: Time To Find It
Time To Find It

Stretching out in front of me
A row of heroes
For as far as I can see
Father, son, brother, husband, lover

You didn’t have to send them
Damn you
But did they need to go?
Gone to save the day
I dunno…
You’re so brave
Shouldn’t we find a better way?

Time to find it
Can’t think of any better day
Time to find it
Before we throw it all away
Shouldn’t we find a better way?

Shouldn’t we find a better way?
Shouldn’t we find a better way?
Time we found it before we throw it all away
Time to find it can’t think of any better day
Time we found it before we throw it all away
Shouldn’t we find a better way?
Shouldn’t we find a better way?

WATER

Human blood is 83% water
1 cup of coffee requires 140 liters of water to produce
Ice cubes float because they’re 9% lighter than water
1 cup of coffee
Requires 140 liters of water to produce

Earth’s fresh water animals are disappearing at 5x the rate of land animals

Looks like it’s gonna rain ~

Water regulates the earth’s temperature
Most of the earth is covered in water ~ between 70 & 75%

Water can also be found in the ground and in the air

1 cup of coffee

The water that exists today existed on earth millions of years ago

1 cup of coffee

The amount of water on earth has remained the same for 2 billion years

Roughly 2 billion people on earth lack a safe supply of water – a full quarter of the world’s population

Can I get you a drink of water?

The majority will walk a minimum of three hours every day to collect safe water
1 cup of coffee

Water can also be found in the ground and in the air

Human beings can live a month without food, but only a week without water
But only a week
But only a week without water

Water can also be found in the ground and in the air

1 cup of coffee

Could you turn the water off please?

To make this place civil?
What do you think it’s gonna take

What do you think it’s gonna take
To make this place unbelievable?

What do you think it’s gonna take
To make this place safe?
What do you think it’s gonna take
To make this place awake?

What do you think it’s gonna take
To make this place green?
What do you think it’s gonna take

Track Name: The Twisting and Turning
The Twisting & Turning

The wide-eyed child surrendering
To moment’s pleasure ~ unweathered
Behold the wisest rendering
Of earthly beauty and whimsy

Yesterday
I questioned the reasons for the day
I picked out the best and pushed the rest away
The harder I tried to get away
The stronger the reasons were for me to stay

The twisting and turning right back in my face is the learning

I trust it’s all meant to be
Fool’s paradise, not for me
~
Behold the wisest rendering
Of earthly beauty and whimsy

Just today
I question the reasons for the day
I pick out the best and push the rest away
the harder I try to get away
The stronger the reasons are for me to stay

The twisting and turning
The gracing and yearning of loving

Is never far from me
Fool’s paradise, not for me
I’m trusting it’s all meant to be

The twisting and turning
The gracing and yearning of hope

The twisting and turning
The gracing and yearning for peace

The twisting and turning
The gracing and yearning of love

The twisting and turning
The gracing and yearning of life
Track Name: Into The Sublime
Into The Sublime

Where do you wanna take it today?

Into the sublime
To a world filled with grace and the promise of better times
Right up to your door
Burning sacred flame fueled by the power
And I’ll whistle for you
As I journey through time
Through the other world, through the night
Great Goddess of Fire
Sing your songs, let your poetry touch me
Flame of knowledge come down, caress me

Here in this space
I’m pondering the mysteries of grace
Lost in this wonder, humanity gets pushed away
I reach for the fire
It fuels my desire for you
And even when it’s quiet
I can’t escape the melody in my head
It flows through the ether
And penetrates my every breath
Reach for the fire
Fuels my desire

And when it’s all said and done?

The sublime
To a world filled with grace and the promise of better times
Right up to your door
Burning sacred flame fueled by the power
And I’ll whistle for you
As I journey through time
Through the other world, through the night
Great Goddess of Fire
Sing your songs, let your poetry touch me
Flame of knowledge come down, caress me

For even when it’s dark
I’ll shine the way for you
And even though we’re tired
I’ll toe the line for you
And even though it’s silent
The melody still comes through
And even though we’re scared
We’re bright like diamonds

Innocent I am
To the point of disbelief
Let sublimity surround me and to dream of world peace
I will dream of you and I will dream for you

Bright like diamonds
Bright like diamonds

Into the sublime
To a world filled with grace and the promise of better times
I will dream for you
Bright like diamonds

I wish you a safe journey

Track Name: The Playing Field
The Playing Field

For the future

Life on this side it can only move ahead
And time moves so quickly I fear it not enough
I’ve used all my trials it’s time I took some steps
For the future

Let the elephant protect you
Bring you good fortune
And what do we bring to the patient elephant?
Save the forest, the seas and what’s between you and me
For the future

Level the playing field
And march toward the future

Let’s think of the future
Let’s think of the future
Let’s think of the future
The future

For the future

Level the playing field
As we march toward the future
Let’s level the playing field
And march toward the future

Let’s take care of Planet Earth

Let’s think of the future
Let’s think of the future
Let’s think of the future

Planeta Terra – Planeta Terra
Planet Earth – Planet Earth

I see waterways clean
& the rain forests safe
I see the whole human race
Drugged by earth’s embrace

And I think to myself
Such a Wonderful World

I see an end to war
And a wash of love
I see its glorious rays spread through
bright nights above

And I think to myself
Such a Wonderful World

The colours on the palette
Grow richer by the day
Barriers between us
Like fog, just lift away

Can you see it?

I see hope on the faces of those long overdue
Sense a feeling of promise for me and for you

Can we get there?

I know we can
You know we can

We’ll fly much higher if everyone goes

And I think to myself
Such a Wonderful World

And I think to myself
Such a wonderful
Such a wonderful world

I see hope on the faces of those long overdue
Sense a feeling of promise for me and for you

Can we get there?
